To Become a Volunteer

We invite you to read all the information on this website. Should you have further questions about volunteer activities or placement procedures please call or email our office. If not, and you are certain that you wish to volunteer at one of our schools, please follow the instructions below.

A. Complete the on-line application form. Please don't forget the names and daytime telephone numbers of two personal references, one of who may be a family member.

I understand that the information I provide will only be used for the purpose of finding an appropriate volunteer opportunity within a school. Personal information will only be shared with school staff connected to the volunteer position agreed apon.

B. A Police Record Check (PRC) is required of all non-parent school volunteers and of those parents involved in high-risk volunteer activity (e.g.: overnight school trips). The applicant must produce two pieces of appropriate identification that confirm his/her name, date of birth and address. One piece of identification presented must include a photo. Health Cards cannot be accepted for identification purposes.

IMPORTANT - please print the following pdf/PRC letter - you must provide this letter to the Ottawa Police Service when initiating a police record check.

Acceptable forms of identification are: Driver's License, Age of Majority Card, Canadian Citizenship Card, Indian Status Card, International Student Card, Passport, Permanent Resident Card, Birth Certificate, Baptismal Certificate, Hospital Card, Canadian Blood Donor Card, Immigration Papers.

Requests for Police Record Checks (PRC) are accepted at the Ottawa-Carleton Police Service Information Desk located at one of the following locations:

  • Kanata - 95 Abbyhill/Eagleson Road - Weekdays: 7am/9pm - Weekends: closed
  • Nepean - 245 Greenbank Road - Weekdays: 7am/9pm - Weekends: 8am/4pm
  • Ottawa Centre - 474 Elgin/Catherine Street - 24 hours seven days a week
  • Gloucester - 4561 Bank Street - Weekdays: 7am/9pm - Weekends: closed
  • Ottawa East - 3343 St. Joseph Blvd/10th Line - Weekdays: 7am/9pm - Weekends: 7am/5:30pm

Requests are processed in approximately 3-6 weeks, assuming timely response from other police services and depending on request volumes. There is a $14.00 fee for a Police Record Check certificate. Upon completion, the outcome of the PRC is mailed to the applicant.

Please note: The $14.00 fee may be waived if the applicant presents a letter from our office indicating our intention to engage them in a volunteer capacity. Contact Anne Brouillard by phone (613-828-6274 ext.255) or e-mail (abrouillard@ocri.ca) to request the letter.

After we have received a copy of your PRC we will continue the screening process by phoning the references you provided. You will then be contacted to discuss volunteer opportunities at specific schools.

Once a potential placement has been arranged you will meet with the school Principal or Volunteer Coordinator to confirm a mutually agreeable volunteer assignment.
